Have you ever wondered what makes an excellent leader and what qualifies a person as an excellent leader? There are many qualities and attributes of leadership? The best reference point for excellent leadership is from God’s word. God sent us Jesus to emulate and model excellent leadership and God said in Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O man what is good. And what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love loving kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” We will examine three principles of excellent leadership and learn what the says about excellent leadership.
To be a just leader we must look at Solomon who ask for wisdom to govern properly. Solomon said inI Kings 3:7-9 “Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around”. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” As a sophomore, I did not have responsibility for leading and keeping everyone on target. I felt comfortable in my role as a member of the track team. However, during my senior year, the head coach circled the team at the high jump pit where everyone stretched before we started workouts. He surprised everyone including me and said, “This year Rex Tonkins will be team captain.” I was shocked and members of the track team laughed. Coach Woodward said “Rex you are the man.” Obviously, I did not feel like I was the man and was bothered by how many people laughed about this appointment. I believe I could relate to Solomon, because I was not sure what it meant to lead a seventy-member track team of both male and female.
